The first Torchbearer of the day was Richard Moules, 65, from Hexham, who carried the Flame from Alnwick Cross Monument. He was nominated for the leading role that he played in the formation of Humshaugh Community Ventures that breathed new life into the local community.
Olympic gymnast Louis Smith also carried the Flame. At the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, at the age of just 19, he took home a bronze medal to become the first Briton in 100 years to win a medal in the men’s Individual event.
In total, 141 inspirational Torchbearewit series the Flame through the communities of Alnwick, Hipsburn, Warkworth, Amble, Ashington, Newbiggin-by-the-Sea, Choppington, Morpeth, Hartford, Bedlington, Blyth, Whitley Bay, Cullercoats, Tynemouth, North Shields, Howdon, Wallsend and Newcastle-upon-Tyne.
The evening celebration featured a variety of entertainment including music from Little Comets, a dance troupe who provided a unique fusion of street performance, theatre & sport and dance act Twist and Pulse. There was also entertainment from local acts staged by Newcastle City Council.
