Day 39: Olympic Flame visits Don Valley Stadium

The Olympic Flame visited the Don Valley Stadium in Sheffield today as it travelled through 16 communities to Cleethorpes.

The Day began at Don Valley Stadium

A total of 130 Torchbearers carried the Flame as it made it's journey 77.24 miles before arriving at Meridian Park, Cleethorpes for the evening celebration.

The first Torchbearer of the day was Lucy Brunt, 13 from Sheffield, who started with the Flame from Don Valley Stadium. Lucy was nominated for her courage and determination in dealing with her Down’s syndrome and the fantastic work she does with the disability sport project called Within Reach.

Poet and storyteller Debjani Chatterjee carried the Flame at the Magna Science and Adventure Centre.

She was nominated through the Lloyds TSB campaign for her extensive work with schools, community centres, libraries and in particular Sheffield Children’s Hospital.

The last Torchbearer of the day was Jack Andrew, aged 92, from Wakefield. A World War II veteran, Jack was nominated for his inspirational passion for sport, which has seen him coach local football and cricket teams, and continue to play golf despite having both knees replaced.

The Relay travelled through the following communities: Sheffield, Rotherham, Dalton, Thrybergh, Conisbrough, Warmsworth, Doncaster, Armthorpe, Dunsville, Hatfield, Scunthorpe, Brigg, Wrawby, Immingham, Grimsby and Cleethorpes.
