The Queen’s Birthday Honours List includes recognition for a number of people associated with the construction of the venues and infrastructure for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, as well as the former UK Olympics Minister.
Former Olympics Minister Tessa Jowell has been made a Dame.
Tessa Jowell, who was responsible within Government for London’s bid and the delivery of the Games from 2005 to 2010, is made a Dame (DBE), the female equivalent of a Knighthood, as is Zaha Hadid, designer of the London 2012 Aquatics Centre.
Dame Tessa receives her award for political and charitable services and Dame Zaha for services to architecture.
Lorraine Baldry, chair of the Olympic Delivery Authority’s planning committee, has been made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE), as have three present and former members of staff at the ODA – Lawrence Waterman (Head of Health and Safety), Simon Wright (Director of Venues and Infrastructure), and Jerome Frost, former Head of Design and Regeneration.
Loraine Martins, formerly the ODA’s Head of Equality, Inclusion, Employment and Skills, is made a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE).
Ian Galloway, former Programme Director and Chief Executive of CLM, the ODA’s Delivery Partner, becomes an OBE, and Martyn Lass, a project manager at London 2012’s engineering design services provider, Atkins, is made an MBE. Peter Bonfield, Chief Executive of the BRE Group, who helped develop and deliver the ODA’s sustainability strategy, is also made an OBE.
Sir John Armitt, chairman of the Olympic Delivery Authority, paid tribute to his staff and Board member honoured by Her Majesty The Queen: 'This is a reflection of the terrific work done by so many people to turn the London 2012 dream into reality – an Olympic Park that will host the world’s best athletes this summer, then be transformed into a new district for London, in one of the UK’s most deprived areas. The stunning sports venues are at the heart of a regeneration project that will leave a legacy for generations to come – all achieved with an impressive health and safety record and involving all sections of the community.'
