Festival events announced to mark 50 days until the Paralympic Games

With less than 7 weeks to go to the start of the London 2012 Paralympic Games, the Southbank Centre has announced it will showcase a programme of commissions by Deaf and Disabled artists as part of the London 2012 Festival.

Creating the Spectacle – Sue Austin
‘Unlimited: the Revelation starts here’ will celebrate the talent and imagination of Deaf and Disabled artists from 30 August – 9 September at London’s Southbank Centre. The 11-day programme, bringing together 29 Unlimited commissions from across the Cultural Olympiad, will be an opportunity to discover new works spanning diverse artforms, including dance and performance, visual arts, comedy, circus, music and theatre.

Highlights of the programme include an evening blending classical ballet and contemporary dance in the world premiere of Marc Brew Company’s Fusional Fragments and featuring the British Paraorchestra. ‘Creating the Spectacle!’, a visually stunning film documenting a series of performances by artist Sue Austin in her self-propelled underwater wheelchair, will also be shown.

The programme is part of the London 2012 Festival, the spectacular 12-week nationwide celebration running from 21 June – 9 September bringing artists from all over the world together in celebration of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Ruth Mackenzie, Cultural Olympiad & London 2012 Festival Director, said: ‘These world-class artists have created brilliant work through Unlimited that has been changing perceptions of people across the UK since 2010.

‘This programme will provide an international showcase for these talented artists when we welcome the world to London during the Paralympic Games.’
