Olympic Village welcomes first guests

Gold-medal standard services and facilities to be offered at the Olympic Village have been unveiled today as the London 2012 Organising Committee (LOCOG) welcomed a small number of guests into the Village for an overnight stay.

First-class Games-time services and facilities to be used by the 22,200 Olympic and Paralympic athletes and team officials will include a 24-hour dining area, a state-of-the-art gym, an extensive entertainment room and a multi-faith centre.

These services are offered in addition to those previously announced including world-class healthcare facilities, a Central Park, and essential shops and services.

Olympic gold medallist and Athletes’ Committee Chair, Jonathan Edwards said: 'After many years of planning its fantastic to see the Village and its stunning services and facilities in use for the first time. The Village has been built around the very specific needs of modern performance athletes and I am confident they will benefit from some of the new features and initiatives the Athletes’ Committee has helped deliver.'

After the Games, the Village will then create a legacy of 2,818 new homes across 11 individually designed plots in a new community to be known as East Village.
