During the day the Flame was carried across the Carrick-A-Rede rope bridge, taken to the Giant’s Causeway and visited Dunluce Castle.
Clare Leahy, 32, from Draperstown, passed the Flame to 65-year-old Denis Broderick from County Derry on the Carrick-a-Rede rope bridge, which links the mainland to the tiny island of Carrickarede.
Peter Jack, 54, of Limavady, carried the Flame on the Giant’s Causeway, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty which covers 18 miles of dramatic cliffs, headlands and a series of bays.
Elsewhere, Isobel Coote, 58, from Ballygawley carried the Flame to the middle of the Peace Bridge, where she handed it to 13-year-old Meabh Fisher from Derry~Londonderry.
Sports Minister Carál Ní Chuilín said: 'The Carrick-a-Rede rope bridge, Giant's Causeway and Dunluce Castle are just some of this island's jewels. I am delighted the Torch has afforded us the opportunity to show these across the world on a stunning sunny day.’
Among the other highlights of the day was an eight-man rowing boat taking the Flame along the River Bann. The Flame was carried by Seamus Reynolds, 47, from Coleraine, who was nominated for his time and commitment to rowing in the local area.
The day was concluded with an evening celebration in St Columb’s Park where Strabane’s Darrel Harpur, the last Torchbearer of the day, lit a celebration cauldron on stage.
The Flame was carried through the following communities during Day 17:
Coleraine, Articlave, Castlerock, Downhill, Bellarena, Limavady, Ballykelly, Greysteel and Derry~Londonderry.
