Day 18 of Olympic torch relay

Tonight's evening celebration took place in Pairc Esler, Newry, and featured a variety of entertainment staged by LOCOG and the three Presenting Partners – Coca-Cola, Lloyds TSB and Samsung – with support from Newry and Mourne District Council.

The line-up included music from General Fiasco, a dance troupe who provide a unique fusion of street performance, theatre and sport, as well as dance act Twist and Pulse.

Highlights of the day

On its journey today, the Olympic Flame visited landmarks such as the Marble Arch Caves and Eniskillen Castle.

The first Torchbearer of the day, Gavin Bate, 46, from Derry~Londonderry, carried the Flame through the Live Site in Guildhall Square. At the age of 21, Gavin walked across the Sahara Desert by himself – a three-month journey that nearly cost him his life and gave him new focus: Gavin has worked tirelessly to help young people in Northern Ireland ever since.

Yvonne Bowles, 56, from Enniskillen, carried the Torch at Enniskillen Castle. Yvonne has been involved with the Guiding movement for over 40 years and has also spent time fundraising for the Horizon West Hospice in Enniskillen, which gives young cancer sufferers the opportunity to receive hospice care close to their friends and families.

The last Torchbearer of the day, Ryan Cinnamond, 17, from Newry, carried the Flame into the evening celebration. Ryan was nominated by Newry and Mourne District Council after suffering a ruptured aortic aneurism in 2010, and losing both his legs below the knee. Ryan never complained once during this terrible time in his life and now, nearly 12 months later, is walking with the assistance of prosthetic legs.

The Flame was carried through the following communities on Day 18: New Buildings, Magheramason, Bready, Ballymagorry, Strabane, Sion Mills, Omagh, Dromore, Irvinestown, Enniskillen, the furthest point west that the Torch Relay will go, Fivemiletown, Clogher, Augher, Aughnacloy, Caledon, Armagh, Portadown, Gilford, Banbridge and Newry.
